FAQ

Frequently asked questions

These are the questions we are asked most often by people thinking of joining. If your question is not answered here, please just ask.

Joining for the first time

Can I join if I have never done yoga before?
Yes. About half of our participants are beginners. Each session is built around the experience, physical condition and temperature of the day, so first-timers are in good hands. Your instructor guides each person individually.
I am not very flexible. Is that a problem?
Not at all. The poses are not something to perfect; they are a way to notice what is happening in your own mind. If you feel stiff, you are often the one who notices the change most. Your instructor guides each person according to how they feel that day.
I am not athletic and I do not have much stamina.
Beach yoga is not a strenuous workout. It centres on unhurried breathing and movement, so it suits people who do not usually exercise and those who are unsure of their stamina. About half of our participants are beginners.
I already practise yoga. Will the session be substantial enough?
Yes, you will move properly. Our experienced instructors read each participant's level within the same session, so beginners and experienced practitioners can attend together and each get what suits them. Beach yoga is less about perfecting fine details of a pose than about releasing your breath and body outdoors. The texture of the sand, the sea breeze, the sound of the waves, the light at dawn and dusk — moving in all of that, even a familiar pose can reveal sensations and a sense of openness you do not meet indoors. If you have practised for years, that freshness is often what stays with you.
Is there a minimum or maximum age?
We welcome everyone from children to older adults, and there is no upper age limit. If you are coming with a small child, please let us know when you book.
Can I join with my children?
Yes, children are welcome. We adapt the session to their age and to what you would like, so please tell us when you book. It makes a lovely family memory.
Can I join while pregnant?
If you are pregnant, please consult your doctor beforehand and tell us when you book. We will adapt the session to how you feel.
I have a medical condition or an injury. Can I still join?
Please tell us about anything you are unsure of when you book or before the session starts. We will make sure you can enjoy it within comfortable limits.
Can I join on my own?
Of course. Solo participants are very common, so there is nothing to worry about. Your instructor makes sure everyone who happens to be in the same session feels at ease together.
Do you offer sessions in English or other languages?
Some of our instructors can guide the session in English. If you would like that, please write it in the message field when you book and we will arrange who takes your session.

Booking and payment

How do I book?
Use "Find a beach and book" on this site and choose the beach, date and time, and number of people you would like.
How late can I book?
Bookings close at 17:30 the day before the session, and we cannot accept requests after that — so once your travel plans are set, please book early. Changes and cancellations are also free of charge until 17:30 the day before.
How many people are needed for a session to run?
Group lessons run with two or more participants. If you are the only one booked, we will offer a one-to-one lesson if you would like it, or cancel the session if you would not. After bookings close at 17:30 the day before, we email to ask whether you would like to attend one-to-one.
How much does it cost?
A group lesson is ¥4,000 and a one-to-one lesson is ¥6,000, tax included. Both are per person and include the 60-minute lesson, our Okinawa-original program, photo files from your session, and yoga mat rental.
How do I pay?
Please pay your instructor on site on the day. We accept cash only, so please have it ready in advance.
Can I get a receipt?
Yes, we are happy to issue one. Just ask when you book or on the day.
Can I change or cancel my booking?
Yes, free of charge until 17:30 the day before the session. Use "Change or cancel" to make the change yourself.
Is there a cancellation fee?
Cancelling by 17:30 the day before is free. After that, and for no-shows without notice, we charge the full amount.
I would like to change the number of participants.
You can change it yourself from "Change or cancel".
Can I book a private session, a group, or an event?
Yes, we arrange these around your group size and what you have in mind. Please get in touch through the contact form.

On the day, what to bring, getting there

What do I need to bring?
Come in clothes you can move in. In summer you will be moving in strong sun and heat, so please bring something to drink. A face towel, sunscreen and a hat also make it more comfortable. Yoga mats are included in the price, so you do not need to bring one.
What should I wear? Will I need to change?
Anything you can move in is fine — a T-shirt, leggings, shorts, sportswear or yoga wear. If you arrive ready to move, there is no need to change on site. Yoga is practised barefoot, so you do not need to think about shoes either.
Where do we meet, and how will I find it?
After you book, we email you the details of the meeting point. Please come to that spot on the day.
How early should I arrive? What if I am running late?
Please arrive by 10 minutes before the start so we can check names. If you think you will be late, call the number we gave you when you booked.
Is there parking? How do I get there?
Parking and access differ by beach. We include the details for your beach in the information we send after you book.
Are there changing rooms, showers and toilets?
Facilities differ by beach. What each beach has is listed in "Okinawa Beach Comparison" — please check before you book.
What should I do with valuables?
Sessions are held on sand, so please bring as little of value as possible and look after your own belongings.
Will someone take photos?
Yes. We set aside time during the lesson for photos. We shoot you against Okinawa's scenery, framed by instructors who know these beaches well, and the files are yours to keep.
What time do sessions start?
Morning yoga starts around 6:00–7:00 and sunset yoga around 17:00–18:30, each running 60 minutes. Times shift with the season — in August they start at 6:00 (morning) and 18:30 (evening).

Weather and cancellation

What happens if it rains?
Sessions are cancelled in rain. We contact you at least one hour before the scheduled start, and a cancelled session costs you nothing. Changes and cancellations you make are also free until 17:30 the day before.
What happens to the fee if the weather turns during the session?
If we cancel before the start, there is no charge at all. If rain or similar makes it impossible to continue once the lesson has begun, we charge half within the first 30 minutes and the full amount after 30 minutes.
When and how will you tell me about a cancellation?
We contact you at the number or address you gave when booking, at least one hour before the scheduled start.
Do sessions run during typhoons or strong winds?
Safety comes first, so we cancel when the weather calls for it. Cancelled sessions cost you nothing.
I am worried about the sun, the heat and heatstroke.
Please bring a hat, sunscreen and something to drink. We hold sessions in the gentler hours of morning and evening, but we recommend drinking little and often.
