You can see the aircraft close up
The end of the beach is about 300 m from the airport runway, so you can watch aircraft land at close range.
Good to Know
The size of the beach
For an urban beach Senaga is long — over 100 m — and the sand is broad. This photograph was taken at low tide; at high tide the water comes up as far as the moored boats.
Water clarity and gradation
Senaga is shallow and completely enclosed by breakwaters, so there is very little wave action. That makes its clarity hard to compare with other beaches, but I will try. This photograph was taken over a shallow patch, so the water looks transparent; look where it is somewhat deeper and the clarity does not seem especially high. That may be because the bottom is mud rather than white sand and so reflects little light. On a clear day the gradation of the sea looks reasonably pretty.
Shade
There are no trees or rocks at Senaga to give shade, and there is no parasol hire either.
Swimming
Senaga is too shallow for swimming. The thing to do here is to splash about at the water's edge in the course of a walk.
Toilets, showers, foot rinse and changing rooms
There are public toilets, showers and a foot rinse a minute's walk from the beach. The showers are outdoors and coin-operated at ¥100. There are no changing rooms.
Equipment hire and shop
It is not a beach for swimming, so there is no equipment hire and no shop. There are several drinks vending machines nearby.
Water sports and marine activities
Jet skis cannot get into Senaga — it is too shallow — so the marine activities here are mainly sailing, kayaking and SUP. See the details for windsurfing with Blahav 151 and for SUP and sea kayaking with Senagajima Marine Service.
Restaurants and cafés
Beside the beach there is Café anjina, where you can have a drink or a meal looking out at the sea.
Barbecues and camping
On the lawn beside the beach there is Island Magic Senagajima, which looks a stylish place for a barbecue or some glamping. Elsewhere there are no signs forbidding barbecues or camping, but there is a good deal of passing traffic and it does not feel settled, so it is not really suitable.
Beach yoga
You can practise yoga on the beach at Senaga all year round. The scent of the sea breeze, the sound of the waves, the warmth of the sun, the gradations of the sea, the changing sky — yoga is a way of taking in the nature of Okinawa with your whole body. Book beach yoga here.
Note
The beach is enclosed by the airport breakwater, so you cannot see the horizon at all — what lies out in front is concrete.
